How to care for a cat after sterilization?

Sterilization (more commonly known as castration) is the removal of the sex glands surgically. Surgery is performed under local or General anesthesia, and after the procedure, animals need some time to recover. How to ease this period for your four-legged friend? Learn to properly care for a cat after sterilization.

So, the procedure is over, what should you pay attention to in the first place?

The effect of anesthesia may persist for 24 hours after surgery, during which time the cat will lose coordination. Therefore, the pet should never be placed on a higher surface (bed, chair, etc.), otherwise it may accidentally fall. The best solution is to insulate the bed on the floor. It should also be remembered that the animal’s temperature decreases after the operation. Be sure to cover your pet with something warm (blanket or sweater) to keep it from freezing.

After successful sterilization, the animals recover very quickly. But it should be understood that for a cat the operation is more complicated than for a cat (more on this in the article “castrate a kitten”). This means that it will take more time to recover. Exercise in the recovery period after surgery should be excluded.

To avoid your pet getting sores, use a special blanket (for cats) or collar (for cats). The first time the condition of the wound must be constantly monitored. To maintain hygiene and prevent the inflammatory process treat them with special spray (for example, Vetericyn), and the appearance of discharge from the wound as soon as possible contact your veterinarian.

Risk of urolithiasis

After sterilization, the risk of developing urolithiasis increases. Because neutered cats move less, drink less, and urinate, this leads to stagnation of urine in the bladder, which increases the possibility of urinary stones (struvites). In order to avoid urolithiasis, you should pay attention to the magnesium content in the food you are going to feed your pet. It should be less than usual. Magnesium is the main component of struvite stones, so it is important to ensure that the pet receives the minimum dose of food.

Always allow the cat free access to fresh drinking water. But do not rush with food. If your pet is not hungry, do not try to force him. He will eat when his appetite returns to normal.

Diapers can also be useful for animals after surgery. Especially if you have a girl, because females recover longer than boys. In the first hours (and sometimes days) after the procedure, a weakened pet will find it difficult to use the tray, and this is normal.

When a cat has a normal appetite, make sure that its diet is high quality and balanced. Also during this period it is useful to give the animal prebiotic drinks. And, of course, be sure to follow the veterinarian’s advice. In the postoperative period, he will prescribe antibiotics, and the scheme of their reception must be maintained.

And yet the best medicine is your attention, care and love. Have you noticed how in difficult times pets reach out to people, like to ask for help? Be for his team, reliable support, and they will definitely appreciate it!
